چکیده

The effect of water ice formation temperature and rate of ice deposition on a cold plate on the amount of trapped argon (equivalent to CO), and the ratios of Ar/Kr/Xe trapped in the water ice were studied at 50, 27 and 22 K and at ice formation rates ranging over four orders of magnitude, from 10 1 to 10 5 m min . Contrary to our previous conclusions that cometary ices were formed at 50–60 K, we now conclude that these ices were formed at about 25 K. At 25 K the enrichment ratios for Ar, Kr, and Xe remained the same as those at 50 K, reinforcing our suggestion of cometary contribution of these noble gases to the atmospheres of Earth and Mars. © 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). In-situ observations and modeling of small nitric acid-containing ice crystals

Measurements in nascent ice forming regions are very rare and help understand cirrus cloud formation and the interactions of trace gases with ice crystals. A tenuous cirrus cloud has been probed with in-situ and remote sensing instruments onboard the high altitude research aircraft Geophysica M55 in the tropical upper troposphere. Besides microphysical and optical particle properties, water (H2...

Irradiation-enhanced adsorption and trapping of O2 on nanoporous water ice

We have found that irradiation with 50–150 keV protons enhances gas adsorption in nanoporous amorphous ice by creating high-energy binding sites. If irradiation is done in vacuum, the ice is compacted and does not adsorb significantly in subsequent exposure to gas. If irradiation occurs while the ice is exposed to an ambient O2 pressure, adsorption is enhanced by a factor as high as 5.5 compare...

In-situ observations and modeling of nitric acid-containing particles in a cirrus cloud formation region

Comparing Enceladus to Comets: Implications for Their Outgassing

The ~ 10 molecules s of material emitted from Enceladus flows out in plumes with similar physical properties (densities, speeds, collimation) to the outflows observed for active Jupiter family comets (JFCs). The physical similarities are due mainly to the common physics of low temperature outgassing of water dominated sublimation into a vacuum from a macroscopic body; the energy budgets and tot...

Limits to Ice on Asteroids (24) Themis and (65) Cybele

We present optical spectra of (24) Themis and (65) Cybele, two large mainbelt asteroids on which exposed water ice has recently been reported. No emission lines, expected from resonance fluorescence in gas sublimated from the ice, were detected. Derived limits to the production rates of water are . 400 kg s (5σ), for each object, assuming a cometary H2O/CN ratio. We rule out models in which a l...
